Elwood G. Haynes’ car, among the first built in the United States, was constructed with the aid of the Apperson Brothers and successfully tested in 1894. Four years later he started Haynes Automobile Company; initially successful, it went out of business in 1925. Aside from his manufacturing endeavors, Haynes was a prominent metallurgist, pioneering in the use of aluminum in motor cars as well as in developing several important structural alloys.
