Eldest of the Fisher brothers, Frederic J. organized the Fisher Body Company in 1908. He served as president and general manager of this concern, as well as holding similar positions with the Fisher Closed Body Company founded in 1910. When a 1916 merger saw the formation of the Fisher Body Corporation, Fisher remained as president and general manager. In 1924 he became a vice president of General Motors, a position he held until 1934. Fisher was a sponsor of many philanthropic projects.
