In 1907 Vincent Bendix organized an auto firm, and sold some 7,000 Bendix motor buggies before the company failed. Bendix developed the starter drive, which bears his name, first selling it to the Eclipse Machine Company in 1913. He became a leader in the aircraft field, and sponsor of the Bendix-Transcontinental Air Races.
